Barbara, Steve, Todd and families,
I am so sorry to hear of Roger's passing.  It was a shock to hear that he is gone.  I was just thinking last week about coming in for a burger and check up on everyone. I'll never forget my days of working at Hudson's to help fill in for Mike's shift while he was gone to police academy many years ago.  Roger was tough but made it fun for me because I was a "girl"!!  I will never forget the time I spent there on my lunch hour and catching up on all the gossip in town from Roger. He will be greatly missed. My sympathy to you all, Andrea

Barb, Steve, and Todd,

I sorry to hear about the passing of Roger.  He really was the heart of Coeur d Alene.  I loved passing poker with Roger, Larry and the gang.  Somehow a Canadian coin would fall in the pot and quickly move out of there.  Coeur d Alene lost a great citizen that put the city on the map, one burger at a time.

May the love of  Christ comfort you at this time of need.

To My Good Friend,

Sixty-five years ago our fathers made an awesome decision.  They brought us together to play and we became good friends.  While they sat and talked and smoked their pipes, we got to know each other.  You had a really great electric train and your Mom made good cookies.  Since we didn't live close, we had to depend on our Dads to bring us together.

We went to different grade schools, but we came together in junior high and finished high school together.  I remember in junior high we both had paper routes.  Every day after school we would jump on our bikes and race downtown to the "Press," fold and pack our papers and see who could be first out to deliver our papers.  I think you won most of the time.

A couple of years after we met, my Mom took my sister and me to pick strawberries with her friend and her two daughters, Barbara and Kay.  Barb and Barb were in the same class at school and went on through high school together.  Along the way they picked up Bunny and Pat.  They were always together.  Then our lives became even more entwined -- you married Barbara and I married Pat.  Pat and I moved away from Coeur d'Alene in 1962 but we always kept in contact as we came back to visit.  I looked forward to a real hamburger.

My boys have been "hooked" on Hudson Burgers for quite a few years and stop in for a fix and a visit with Steve and Todd whenever they come to town.  Even a few of my grandchildren have been introduced to Hudson burgers.  When our granddaughter travels with us, she makes sure a trip to Hudson's is on our agenda.  I was thinking, my grandfather's office was just a block up Sherman.  I'll bet he paid a visit to Harley's shop once in a while.

I woke up early Sunday morning to the sweet aroma of a pipe.  It must have been our Dads coming to tell me everything will be all right.

Good-bye old friend.

Bob Boughton

We are truly saddened by Rodger's passing. He was a wonderful neighbor who always looked out for us. When I was sick and going through my Cancer treatments he always cleaned the snow from our driveway and helped Jodeen keep up on things. Later as we remodeled our home Rodger was always encouraging and gracious as he looked at our messes. He and Barbara kept their home immaculate and we were very proud that they welcomed us into their neighborhood. Rodger and I shared an interest in cars and I enjoyed visiting him when he had his Mini Cooper and Chevy out. Our hearts are heavy but go out to Barbara and the family as JoDeen and I know what a giving and sincere man he was. We are better people by having the opportunity to know Rodger.

Dear Barbara, Todd, Joni, Steve & Julie,
Our thoughts and prayers are with you in your time of sorrow. On May 30, 2008 Coeur d'Alene lost one of its great heroes. Roger was responsible for so many Wonderful projects in Coeur d'Alene. One of my favorites was the Fort Sherman Park Project that Roger spearheaded for the Panhandle Kiwanis. Roger will be missed by all of us that knew him.

To the Hudson Family:

I am truly saddened by the passing of Roger. I wish you and your family the very best and hope you remember all of the Great times Roger as provided for your family.

He was a wonderful Man! Outgoing, funny, short tempered sometimes. I always remember the very hard to shake ketchup containers Roger designed on purpose to aggravate the customers. Well I thought he did it on purpose anyway.

I have very fond memories of Roger. He gave me my first job (He might have regretted that). I hope in the next few months you will deal with your loss in a good and positive way. When I lost my Mom, Kay, it was extremely difficult for us, but we have survived. I have great memories of Kay and Roger kibitzing in Huddie's and at JC Penny at the sidewalk sales on Sherman Avenue.

My Father Cliff, my Sister Debbie, and my Son Sean
(Sean tells me where I had my first job often....HUDDY HA MBURGERS!!!) are thinking of you, and wish you the very best in this very difficult time.

You are in out thoughts and prayers. God Bless.

Sincerly,

Douglas Agar

Dear Barb,Todd and Steve,Roger has always been one of my favorite people in this area.
We have been Kiwanis as brother Kiwanians for a long time...20 years or more. I loved to go on projects with Roger because he was always so positive and nothing stopped hime from doing a great job,big or small. We all have lost a real asset to this part of Idaho. I played golf with Roger last summer and really got to know him even better..great guy and easy to like.
He is now with the promise of Christ..God Bless You,Bill and Helen Zales

To Barbara and the Hudson Family,

We were so saddened to hear of Roger's passing.  When we joined the Coeur d'Alene Volkssport Club, he was one of the first we met.  We always enjoyed seeing you both at the walks and Roger added much happiness and spirit to our days.  We will miss him.

To the family,

As a young teenager I was introduced to my first Hudson's hamburger back in the 60's.  It has been a joy and a pleasure to have known three generations of Hudsons.  With the passing of Roger I feel a deeper loss as we bacame more than acquaintances after I married my second husband.  Volksporting was a large part of our outdoor entertainment and we went to most of the Coeur d'Alene events.
I remember how proud Roger was of the walk up to the new Veterans Memorial Bridge before it opened and the first walk on Hagadon's golf course.
I will always remember Roger's enthusiasm and smile.
He made a difference and influenced a vast number of people.
My heartfelt condolances to all of you,
Sandy(Sandra) Lewis-Emerson

I am privileged to have had the chance to know Roger.  As fellow Kiwanians, we had many opportunities to serve this community.  Besides being a great American, great family man, and all around great guy, Roger was the consummate Kiwanian - always one to show up on project days, always willing to tackle a leadership role, a good organizer, fun to be around, always sporting a smile and dry sense of humor, and most importantly, always focused on why the club exists. to serve the children of the world.   I had the chance to serve as our club's president, and in taking the helm, I was told that the toughest challenge is picking one to bestow the honor of receiving recognition as Kiwanian of the Year.  This is truly an honor as it reflects the best of the best among very great people.   However, in the end, I found selecting Roger to receive the club's highest honor was simple as he so clearly stood out.   We will all miss Roger's smile, upbeat personality, and strong work ethic and commitment to philanthropy.  I am blessed to have had the opportunity tp spend time with him.  God bless you Roger.

To Barb,Steve,Todd and all of your family members:

We extend sincere condolences for your loss of Roger, a unique individual who set himself apart as a very dear and genuine friend. He will be missed for the many roles he assumed in your community.

By strange coincidence, Roger's memorial falls on my birthday giving that day special meaning for me to think about Roger's delight in telling stories about his Buddies: how he managed to talk Paula into giving him that last slice of huckleberry pie while Dick could only glare helplessly. Roger enjoyed talking good story and his life was a race well run..

Bereavement may be one of the things that helps you toward a stay on earth reminiscent of John Mill's Poem:
"Life's race well run...life's work well done...life's victory won...Now cometh rest."

I can remember when my dad took my brother and me to Hudsons for a hamburger which was a real treat.  I loved sitting up on the high stool watching Roger cut those pickles!  It seemed like he knew everyone who came in and called most by their first name.  In fact, my father was Roger's  Jr. high school teacher (Richard Costello) so they always had a great time trading jokes. I have lived in this town all my life and though much has changed, you could always walk into Hudsons and feel like nothing had changed at all......and that's a wonderful thing.
Thank you to Roger and family for keeping Hudsons the heart of Coeur d' Alene.  Roger will be missed by so many people.

My sympathy to all the family.

I remember growing up in CDA and one of my fondest memories was when my dad (Jack Shaver) would come home from logging camp on Friday night and, on Saturday morning, he would take me (and sometimes my brother, Bob) downtown.  He needed a haircut at the barbershop and a trip to Lighthouse Sporting Goods.  But, I knew that if I could stand those two awful things, being a girl and all, we would end up on a stool at Huddy's.  It was worth the wait.  Back then, CDA was small and my dad seemed to know everyone in the place.  It took quite a while to get him out of there, which just gave me more time to eat!  Now, I take my husband and kids there to try to relive my past.
I am so sorry about your loss.  Roger will truly be missed.

The Sweeney/Eagle family are thinking of you.  Your husband/father was a very special man!  The memories we have of Roger go way back. What a wonderful supporter of the community.  I remember when my brother Rick (coaching basketball at Moscow)had a game at the CDA High School, my husband & myself stopped in for a Hudson and told Roger we were going to the game.  As we were leaving Roger handed us a bag with 2 burgers to take to Rick no charge.  Rick got tears in his eyes when we handed him the bag, they lost, but Rick said it made the loss a little easier. Having lost our father we know the hole it leaves in your heart, but wonderful memories of times spent will help later on.

Rick/Post Falls High school received reconizition for being State Champions in 1964 about three yrs. ago.  He flew from Las Vegas, he did not know his oldest son Roger, who lives in Alabama, flew himself & his son who
was 13 up to surprize him.  The one thing Roger wanted was for his Dad (Rick) and his son to have a Hudson Hamburger together.  So that day before the award presentation the Sweeney family goes to Hudson's - video camera in hand 4 generations of Sweeney's eating the best hamburgers in the U.S. Another memory for our family involving the Hudson's.  Thanks you for all the memories!!  Rick & myself remember coming into town with Dad & Gramp to get their hair cuts, go to movie & get a Hudson across the street with Howard cooking!

We've had 4 generations eating Hudson's & myself has now had 4 generations of Hudson's cook me a hamburger.

Because of the special men (Roger & Howard) who show you all the ropes your family legacy will live on.

Fondly,

Vickie Sweeney Eagle - 60 years old

Terry and I have such great memories of Roger, driving over 5 hours to make it "home" for the weekend or summer vacation. "Huddies" was the 1st place we would stop... Roger would always get us up to date with the latest... (lot's of humor involved) He always made us feel like we had never been gone.. and so the tradition contunes with our boys!
When we first got our jet skis, we had to take it over for Roger to try out!  He will be missed!

As I was reading the Spokesman Review a couple of days ago, I was shocked to read about Roger.  My condolences to his wife, sons and family.

Roger, Howard and I had a special relationship.  I met Roger through Howard whom I worked for in 1958 and 1959 when the "Huddie" business was across the street.  I was a student then at N.I.J.C. and my wage per work shift was "two burgers", and a silver dollar and a quarter per hour. Howard treated me like a son and even asked me to run his business one summer while he took a break -- I gracefully declined as I preferred to work outdoors for the State of Idaho Highway Department.

As the years went by and I came to CDA on military leave, I would always stop by and see Roger and of course have a "cheese both", a milk and loads of hot sauce.  Since Roger and I had traveled in Europe, we always found the time to visit and exchange military and travel stories.

He was a super guy and one whom, like his father,  I will truly miss.

There are moments when you need to reflect on how a few people formed the foundation of your life. I was extraordinarily lucky to grow up in Coeur d' Alene with a several great friends and families.

Only now can I express an understanding and appreciation for how much people like Roger shaped and influenced my character and beliefs by providing examples through their own simple actions.

I respected Roger not only as the proprietor of an iconic business in the community, and as the father of a close friend, but also as someone who always lit up when he saw me and always wanted to know what was happening in my life. Roger possessed a fundamental joie de vive that imprinted on me and I've long been inspired by the extensive travels that Roger and Barb enjoyed.

Roger also taught me never to order an egg sandwich, even if I was just kidding.

Farewell, Roger. Say hi to Jody for me.

S1: To the Hudsons,

The Hudson family has had a profound impact on my life since my family moved to Coeur d'Alene (from Sandpoint) when I was 8 years old.  Sometime during that first year, my dad took my brother and I into Hudson's for a burger.  Since that time, I've probably eaten enough Huddy burgers to send Cassie through Yale.  By about age 12, I was riding my bicycle downtown every Saturday during the school year, and probably four times a week during the summer, to wolf down a double and a single.  After a couple years of that, Roger and Steve must have figured I would blow my entire college fund on burgers if they didn't hire me, so I made the transition to the other side of the counter in the summer of 1990.  It was my first "real job", and I had a lot to learn.  All of my previous income had been derived from solo jobs... mowing lawns, shoveling driveways, clearing brush, and the like.  One boy, one task.  Keeping up with 18 hungry customers, a boss, and a co-worker was enough to scramble my young circuits.  But Hudson's was a perfect microchosm of American business, and everyone there taught me from a different perspective.  Roger was the voice of logic and business sense.  Steve was the voice of calm and encouragement.  Todd, when he returned to the business a year or so after I started, taught me to have fun while I worked.  And Andi Coon was the rabid doberman, inspiring faster work through fear and intimidation. ;-)  But Roger was most interested in my exploits outside of the burger biz.  Roger was an athlete in high school, and I was a musician and straight A student.  Most band geeks don't get much praise from jocks, but Roger always knew when I received an award or was placed in a select group, and went out of his way to praise my accomplishments with the genuineness of a proud father.  We also had a shared interest in classic cars.  I spent years drooling all over his red and white Chevrolet... when I completed work on my 1970 Oldsmobile, Roger was one of the first people I wanted to show it off to.  Even after I quit slinging burgers and moved on to college, Roger always kept up with what was happening in my life.  I was fortunate to do a lot of traveling during college and later for business, and Roger and I would share stories about our experiences in various places throughout the world.  He was a genuinely caring man.

Roger, you taught me many things.  Live with integrity.  Anything worth doing is worth doing well.  Treat everyone fairly and with equal respect.  Pursue your passions.  And the first step to success is caring about the success of others.

You also taught me one final lesson... one which has been difficult to take.  I learned of your illness a few weeks ago.  I got your mailing address, and I wanted to take the time to write these things down to let you know the positive effects you have had on my life and so many others.  But I got "busy"... I thought I had time.  I was waiting for a block of time so I could do it right.  But now you're gone, and I missed the opportunity to enrich your final days like you enriched mine.  So the lesson is this: don't wait to praise the people who have encouraged you.  There is no wrong way to do it.

So, to Steve, Todd, and the entire Hudson family, I want to say "Thank you."  Thank you for taking on a young kid and teaching him how to work (and feeding him a heck of a lot of burgers).  Thank you for all of your encouragement and friendship.  Thank you for keeping the small-town spirit of integrity and service alive and well in our ever-growing city.  And thank you for continuing the legacy that Roger and those before him laid down in our corner of the world.

And what a wonderful legacy it is.

Best wishes to all of you,
Joe Malloy

Barbara, Steve, Todd and families. When I came to CdA I was told to go to Hudsons as I would meet not only Roger but many business men in town. Roger greeted ma and said  if you want to visit come over early mornings before I open, as I normally don't have time to visit when we open. He was right, yet our early morning chat's were great and I learned much about CdA from him. We became good friends, a few times on the racket ball floor, which sometimes he let me win.
Roger was a tremendous asset to our city , doing many things he seldom got credit for. He became a true frind to me and my family. His support for all school activities was wonderful as was his personal attitude for life. When my Daughter comes to town  she always has to have a huddie, my son's also. when in CdA  our visit to Hudson's was a must, and still is.
Our thoughts and prayers  are with the Hudson family .Your loss is a loss to our community which Roger loved, helped and was a CdA backer in all ways. I know he trained Steve and Todd as the Hudson's atmosphere is as it was with Roger.
God Bless the Hudson family and may Roger rest in peace.

I was sorry to read about the passing of Roger.  As so many others around this area my entire family knew him and his family(Steve,Todd primarily) through our many, many stops into the best hamburger place anywhere.  We shared many stories, jokes and just plain good times there.  You know there is a connection when generations pass and families still recall not only the burger but most importantly the integrity and kindness of the man.  Thanks so much for giving us the opportunity to share in his life.

One measure of a man is the sum of the lives he touched, and Roger touched so many lives in so many ways that the huge outpouring of grief at his death helps define how special he was.
His family, especially his two fine sons, can take, perhaps, some measure of comfort in reflecting on the adventurous and busy life he lived.
My condolences and suport go to all of them.

Roger and Hudson's Hamburgers will always be forever part of our fondest memories living in Coeur D Alene. Sometimes people leave this world too soon.

Sincerely, Betty

Our deepest sympathy to the Hudson family from our entire family. Roger always had a big smile for us when we would come to get our fabulous hamburger and lots of talking went back and forth. Besides the fabulous hamburger we've come to love it's the ambience of Hudson's (which is Roger, Steve and Todd) that is so special.

To the dear family of Roger...I just attended the beautiful memorial service for Roger and I was not able to sign the guest book, so I wanted to make sure I left my condolences here...I remember Roger mostly from the late '60's to early '70's, and several times after that, when he and Howard fixed my lunch almost every day..I worked just around the corner, so in the beginning it was very convenient, after that - necessary! At first, I couldn't understand why people were lined up clear out the door for lunch, until I tasted my first burger...Don't change a thing, Steve! My prayers are with you all and may God send His peace and comfort to each one of you. With loving memories...Jeanne (Stone) Helstrom, Cd'A

Roger and I shared many good times together both in Kiwanis and over the counter, I especially have fond memories of our trip to Seattle to see acts at an airshow that maybe would fit in our little airshow in CDA. Roger told us he would furnish lunch as his part of the costs of the trip, he did, a paper bag full of cold hamburgers. After lots of teasing, we ate and enjoyed the trip. Like everybody else has said......he will be missed

So sorry to hear about your Dad, Todd (and of course, your whole family).  I loved the tribute video and the fabulous adventures your folks enjoyed.  Yet another testament and reminder to DO IT ALL NOW, never wait for some other, better time to do all of the things you want to do!

Must share burger story - we never could figure out how Mom (Karen Huber) always knew we'd been to Hudson's BEFORE we visited her at Penney's downtown .. it was usually after we exhaled our fabulous oniony breath that she seemed to know... hmmmm...  seemed an amazing feat to me!

Roger was a truly special gentleman, a wonderful friend.  I cherish the memories I have of Roger - all the Kiwanis projects, WSU Cougar football games, Wednesday morning Kiwanis breakfasts, etc.

President Bush 41 had his points of light program.  Roger Hudson was a point of light in my life.

Barbara, Todd & Steve...we are so sorry for your loss.

I had just heard from my brother Roger via phone message about Roger's passing. I rememeber when I was a bit younger & would come in to CDA. It was a must to stop by & have a Hudson Hamburger or two, either made by his Dad or by Roger. He was personable with his customers 'friends' that stopped by & visited with him thru the years. Later after his retirement we would keep track of where was Roger via his sons. Last I had heard he was in Africa. GOOD FOR HIM!! I have fond memories of him, how he would remember all of OUR family members and keeping track of them and of his smile when he greeted you. He will be missed.

I went to school with Steve, and can remember riding my bike to the house to clean every Saturday.  Of course nothing compares to a "Huddy Burger".  To this day I tell people to stop in if they are in Coeur d' Alene, the experience is like none other.  God Bless you Steve, I am sorry for your loss.   Jo

To the Hudson Family:
We just learned of Roger's passing and wanted to let you know how sad we are.  We have been enjoying hamburgers at Hudson's since the 60's and Roger was one of the reasons we came back again and again.  Watching him train his sons to take over the business was fun and we make a point to drop by and see them too.  Roger was a wonderful man and will be missed.  Roger, his family and Hudsons have a special place in our hearts.

Dear Barb, Steve and Todd,

My mother's (Margaret O'Malley)tribute to Hudson's in USA Today, still hangs on the wall at Hudson's.  Roger was a wonderful man that never failed to contact me on his many trips to Alaska, while I lived in Anchorage.  He developed a friendship with the owners of the Arctic Roadrunner which was Anchorage's "Hudson's Wannabe".

I will miss him.

Sincerely,

Chuck O'Malley

I feel like Roger was a part of our growing up from day one. From the old neighborhood on 9th St, to special hamburgers at Hudsons. I know Dad will really miss him at poker. He has talked about him a lot over the years and I know he considers him a special friend. He will be missed!

To all the family I extend my deepest sympathies and condolences. I just learned of Rodger's passing. Roger was such a warm and gentle man to be around and I have so many fond memories both from waiting on him on any given Sunday morning at Perkins & Dave's Restaurant, to having him wait on me enjoying a Hudson Burger.
