Shirley J. (O'Reilly) Fiscus

January 7, 1931 ~ January 4, 2007

Funeral services will be on Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2007 at 2 p.m. at English Funeral Chapel in Coeur d'Alene.

Shirley J. (O'Reilly) Fiscus passed away in her sleep on Jan. 4, 2007. She would have been 76 on Jan. 7. Shirley was born on her family's farm outside Potlatch, Idaho, the third of three daughters born to John F. and Alma McMillan O'Reilly. She graduated from Palouse, (in Washington) High School in 1948 and married Walter Fiscus Jr. on Sept. 5 of that same year. Their three children, John, Sherry and Randy, were all born in Moscow, Idaho. The family moved to Coeur d'Alene in 1961, fulfilling a long-time dream of Shirley's.

Shirley returned to college when her children were all in school, commuting to Spokane Community College to become an LPN in 1963. She went on to become a registered nurse, working primarily in the newborn nursery at Kootenai Medical Center. She retired after 22 years. Many, many area babies and their mommies started their lives together with Shirley's caring, compassionate help and encouragement.

Shirley and Wally enjoyed retirement a great deal, taking many trips into the back country of Central Idaho. Shirley lost her beloved Wally in 1992. Her parents, her sister Phyllis Anderson and an infant brother, Michael, also preceded her in death.

She is survived by her sister Dorothy (Dick) Hoskins, of Coeur d'Alene; sons John (Mary Braun) of Omaha, Neb., Randy (Polly Fullwiler) of Coeur d'Alene; and daughter, Sherry (Joe) Schroeder, of Kennewick, Wash. Shirley was a loving, devoted grandmother to Brennan, Eden and Austen White, Conner and Kramer Fiscus, and Leo and Delaney Schroeder. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive her.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Make-a-Wish Foundation.

I'm so sorry to hear about Mrs. Fiscus passing on.  I worked with her in the nursery at Kootenai Memorial Hospital a LONG time ago--about 1980ish.  I remember those green blue scrub outfits and yellow cover gowns we wore when tending the babies.  I have fond memories of the quiet nights feeding newborns in that tiny nurses' station and sharing snacks and talking all night shift. She was a very nice lady, always a bright spot and very helpful and kind to me as a new nurse.  I even visisted her at Beehive Homes. I'm sorry for your lose, but it is easy to remember her sweet smile.

Dear Sherry and family,

I am so sorry to hear about your loss.  I don't know if you remember me, but I was a friend of Austen's in high school.  I was acutally trying to look him up through the internet when I found the article regarding Sherry's mother.  I am sorry that this was how I found you guys again, but I hope you are well and the family is all well.  It would be great to hear from you guys again.  Take care and you have my condolences.

All the Best,
Ron Bowman

I was so sorry to hear of Shirley's passing.  I have so enjoyed getting to know her during the last few years that she has attended the O'Reilly family reunions.  She was always so sweet and friendly!  I will miss her and hope that the rest of the family will join us so we can get to know you better too.  With sincere condolences, Bonnie Thompson
