Brian and I are missing Tom very much. Our thoughts and prayers are with
his family and friends. He was a very kind person who took so much
pleasure in his gardening. We were very fortunate to enjoy his cooking talents
as well. It is hard to imagine him not being around anymore. It is like a
piece of our puzzle is missing. Tom...we miss you so very much and we hope
you are in a better place now.

I was so sorry to hear about Tom's passing. I rented from the Hayman
family during the time Tom and got to know him while living there. I
really enjoyed talking about cooking and gardening with him. He has such a
wealth of knowledge. I have since moved but every once in awhile would run
into Tom and have a nice visit. He was a wonderful man. Vicki

I was very sad to hear the news about Tom. I will never forget the first
day I met him which proved to be what we thoght then as "Love at first
sight" we were 14 years old, but I will never forget the many nights we
spent on the telephone while he played the piano to me and we talked about what
our day had been like. Seeing him again last Sept. while I was in CDA was
great.
My prayers are with his family and friends.

My wife and I were deeply saddened when we heard of Tom's death a few days ago.
I have not lived in Coeur d'Alene for over 30 years, and Tom is one of a small
handful of childhood friends whom I still speak with frequently. In
fact, the day I learned of his death, I found a package (we frequently received
"care packages" from Tom) containing a CD from the great New Orleans
bluesman, John Mooney, and a DVD of Mexican Folk art. Tom actually introduced me
to Mr. Mooney in the 1980s, when I visited his little house on Governor Street
in the French Quarter of New Orleans. He knew a lot about music, and
especially the blues. He had an incredible memory, and could recall arcane
facts about musicians both famous and forgotten. He also introduced me to the
idea of real travel in Mexico, which has been a consistent passion of mine since
he regaled me with stories of his travels during a conversation we had on
Sander's beach, back in the early seventies. So we are really going to
miss Tom and his kindness to us. He was so generous to us with the little
he seemed to have. I wish I could have done more for him. Adios, mi
amigo, Marco

Sandy and Family,
I am so sorry to hear about Tom. We swam together and I coached in the
last couple of summers of his competition. We would run into each other
the last couple years at the "getto" IGA. We said we would get
Jan (Huetter) and all go out to dinner and relive the ol' swim years. ACT
ON YOUR INTENTIONS. Will miss WEE Tom.

Being the split shift years I never knew Tom in high school, I guess more when
we were kids and our Dad's would hook up. I knew Tom was multi talented
but had no idea how much living he got out of life. What a journey.
I wish I'd have sat with him longer the times I saw him at Caopne's.
Always a great guy. My son worked with him at CP and it was fun to see him
connect to another "old timer". Our best wishes to the family.

To Tom's family and friends I give you my condolences, he will be deeply
missed. He was very much a "right hand guy" to many of his peers. I
worked with him and 1 of my memories that used to make me giggle is, when Tom
was having his break or lunch he would answer the "cash cab
"program on tv. He always answered them correctly and would grin
when the passengers won money. He used to get a kick out some of the answers
that were wrong. Silly but it was funny. You will be in my thoughts and
prayers.

Where to start..First, my deepest condolences to Tom's remaining family.
As a long time friend and classmate of Tom's, I can say that no gathering of
old friends will ever be the same without him. Tom was always the first
to provide whatever was needed for a good get together, whether it be music,
taking pictures, good conversation, etc. He could always be counted on for a
gentle smile and a good visit. He was such a unique and special man and
I know we all will miss him terribly. Tom, I hope you are in a better
place now and have found the peace that you so deserve. I will never
forget you. Much love, Debbie Nustad/Raeon

To Tom's family and friends, Tom will truely be missed and my thoughts and
prayers go to you. I had a great pleasure of working with Tom and he was
always a team player. Something I would like to share that sounds silly but it
always made me giggle is On Tom's lunch or breaks he would watch the program
"cash cab', and without a blink answered every question correctly, and
when the passenger would not answer wrong he always had a grin of knowing he
knew the answer. That is 1 of the many things I think of when I remember Tom.
My prayers and condolences are to everyone that knew him. He will be

Tom was the first class mate (and Brian Flynn) that I met when my family moved
to CDA in 1970. He has been a friend ever since, and I will never forget how
he has influenced my life.
With such topics as science, religion, archeology, charla's en espanol, food
and cooking, art, landscapes, MUSIC and musicians, understanding the world and
so much more. I always admired Tom's global knowledge and
understanding. He covered much of the globe.
He showed me first-hand some of his archeological study sites and this was
event that I will never forget. He introduced me to many of his life
long friends as well, that have become dear friends to me, which is something
I am thankful for.
Our prayers are with Sandy and his family and we want you to know how much Tom
meant to all of us. We have lost a great friend and person but are so
privilaged to have such wonderful and unique memories of Tom to live on with.

Tom was one of the Really Smart Kids in high school, and although he was in
some of my classes, we didn't really know each other back then. Much later on,
when I drove Cab in CDA, Tom was a co-worker. I knew he'd lost his brother
Jack, who also drove cab. Anyway, in spite of the fact that Tom and I probably
exchanged no more than 10 words all the way thru high school, as a co-worker,
he was a very congenial and friendly person, easy to talk to, and I always
appreciated that. Take care, Tom...

I signed in again because I wanted to offer Tom's family and friends the gift
of a poem my brother, Patrick O'Malley, wrote for our niece's memorial in
2005. The words say it all.
Rest easy, weary traveler, your burdens are behind.
It's we, who love you, who must fight the rage
That circumstance could be so cruel, or life be so unkind,
To quell your light at such a vibrant age.
And those who love you dearly, but sadly were not near
When despair and depression cast their pall,
Seek solace that the life of love you led makes it seem clear,
That He Who's Never Absent broke your fall.
Rest easy, weary traveler, enjoy the lifted load.
And know our love is with you all the while,
Until, upon a better day, on a far better road,
We walk with you again and see your smile.

I met Tom at Sanders Beach. I was 13 he was 10! He invited me to his house to
listen to Muddy Waters, Bo Diddly and Bob Dylan. I was into The Beatles and
Rolling Stones. I was freaked out! Over the years I came to expect the
unexpected from him. We had beer and other things to keep us laughing. I had
the pleasure of meeting up with him in New Orleans where we would eat great
food, listen to great music, drink beer and lie. I will miss his chuckle, his
sincerity, and most of all his
love of all things interesting, weird and challenging. Rest well my old

garden and enjoy his cooking. Peace be yours, friend.

I was very saddened to hear of Tom's passing. Everytime I think of him
my mind is filled with so many wonderful memories. I don't remember
exactly when or how my family connected with the Emerson family, but it was
well before junior high. My brothers and I were the same relative ages
as Sandy, Jack and Tom...it seemed a natural fit. Tom and I spent a
great deal of time on and around the lake and Tubbs Hill...MANY fondly
remembered summers...We almost grew up together in many ways. As much
time as we spent together I never remember Tom ever staying mad...He always
worked issues out with me...communication was one of his strengths...a truly
fine quality. Tom was very generous at heart. We did attend some
wonderful parties together (understatement) and it occured to me that Tom
wasn't having a good time unless everone was having a good time...he cared for
people. I pray that we can all take away some of the spirit and
qualities that made Tom the wonderful person that we knew and apply it in our
lives as often as we are able...in honor of Tom. Thank you, Tom, for
enriching my life and those around you.

Tom gave so much of himself and touched so many lives. Each and every
one of us feel his departure in some way. He touched my life in high
school and his passing has touched my life again.
My love to all who are feeling this loss.

When I recall childhood and adult memories of Tom, I think of walking down 12th
street on my way to Sanders Beach and always hearing music coming from his
house. I think of his cannonballs off the rock. I think of his mellow but
strong voice. I think of his wonderful smile and his big teddy bear aura. I
think of his warm greetings and kind words. I think of his unique stride and
of the way he made me blush. Now, when I think of Tom, I wish I could've
invited him on a Legendary Rhythm and Blues Cruise to listen to great blues
artists and maybe join one of them in a cooking demonstration. I think, I
would've liked to uncork a red with him and listen to him talk endless story.
Now, when I listen to the blues, eat sumptuous food, hear of a great
archeological discovery, smell the sweet plumaria, hear Spanish, visit Sanders
Beach or get together with other classmates to talk story, I'll think of Tom.
