Doris Claire Hagdorn-Bartlett was born on November 27, 1939, to Claire and Erwin Hagdorn in Jersey City, New Jersey. Doris lived in Union City, Palisades Park, and Pompton Lakes, NJ. Growing up, she worked in her father’s bakery, which she had many fond memories of the treats and experiences which she recounted frequently in later life. She graduated from Pompton Lakes High School in 1957. Doris attended Georgian Court College, Lakewood, NJ and graduated in 1961 with a BS in Elementary Teaching. She taught for 4 years in Mount Tabor, NJ. She then was hired by the Department of Defense to teach on military bases overseas. She began at Misawa AFB in Misawa, Japan in 1965. After 2 years she transferred to Kadena, Okinawa for a year. While in the Far East, Doris traveled at every opportunity. She made it as far south as Australia and New Zealand. Then Doris received a transfer to Germany, where she spent the next 27 years teaching in Babenhausen, Frankfurt, Laupheim, Ulm and Vilseck. Germany was a second home for Doris as she had relatives there that she could visit regularly. While in Frankfurt she met Lt. Col. Dean Bartlett, who she married after his retirement from the Air Force. They enjoyed an active life with many outdoor excursions and camping trips in Germany until Doris retired in 1995. Since Dean was from Missoula, MT, they came west looking for a place to settle. They discovered Coeur d’Alene, ID, and made their home there. Doris enjoyed gardening, walks, and RV trips with Dean. She also was involved with Book Club, bowling, and Mah Jongg, all 3Cs activities. As a member of the Knit Wits, her knitting skills created many donated items for charities. She volunteered at the Humane Society (now Companions Animal Center), various groups at St. Pius X Catholic Church, and at Holy Family Catholic School. Her husband Dean passed away in 2010. Doris is survived by her brother Peter Hagdorn with wife Lynn; nephew Gerald Hagdorn with wife Michelle, daughters Caitlynne and Caryn, son Jeremy and grandchildren Ella and Hollis; niece Michelle Craig with husband Bill, daughters Rachel and Meghan; niece Pelar Hagdorn with wife Mandi Risden, sons Luke and Logan; and niece Patricia Morgan with husband Mark, daughters Claire, Adeline, and Theresa.
A Memorial Mass and inurnment will be at St. Pius X Catholic Church, 625 E. Haycraft, Coeur d'Alene, Idaho on Friday May 1, 2026 at Noon. A reception in the parish hall will follow.
