Douglas Lee Johnson passed away at his home in Coeur d’Alene on Oct. 24, 2023.
Douglas was born in Coeur d’Alene in 1946 to Theodore and Shirley Johnson. Doug (as his friends and family called him) was an Army veteran and proud union retiree from Labors Local 238. He took great care of his grandchildren, whom he helped raise, and all of his neighbors. Doug was a generous man who could be caught on any given day giving an unexpected gift, helping a neighbor with yard work or cooking for guests, such as the missionaries from his wife’s church. Doug was a skilled man who loved fishing, hunting, boating, gardening and huckleberry picking. Unfortunately, he took his secret huckleberry picking location with him.
Doug will be greatly missed by his wife, Dorene Johnson, who has said he was a perfect husband. He always took extra care to help her around the house, help with the cooking and in finding thoughtful ways to show he cared, such as expanding her cookie jar collection or planting vegetables he knew she would like. He made sure to tell her how much he loved her often.
Doug was preceded in death by his father, Theodore Johnson, mother Shirley Johnson, brother “Butch” Johnson and sister-in-law Diane Johnson.
He is survived by his wife, Dorene Johnson, sister Connie Johnson, stepson Lance Whitman, nephew Clay Johnson, nieces Teddi Johnson and Kristi Messenger, granddaughters Shea Bell and Lea Pearce, and 10 great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held Nov. 13, 2023, at 5 p.m. at The Church Of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at 2801 N. Fourth St. in Coeur d’Alene.
