James William MacKenzie Jr., 49, of Spokane, Washington, passed away on December 15, 2025. He proudly served his country for 20 years in the United States Marine Corps, retiring at the rank of Gunnery Sergeant (E-7).
Born in Plattsburgh, New York, James later lived in Taunton, Massachusetts before committing his life to military service. Throughout his career, he exemplified the Marine Corps values of honor, courage, and commitment. He deployed worldwide and served with distinction, earning the respect of his peers and leaders through steadfast dedication, discipline, and leadership.
During his honorable service, Gunnery Sergeant MacKenzie received numerous awards and decorations, including the Expert Rifle and Pistol Badge, Iraq Campaign Medal with one star, Marine Corps Drill Instructor Ribbon, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Korean Defense Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal. His service reflected unwavering loyalty to his fellow Marines and a deep sense of duty to his country.
Following retirement, James faced personal challenges that many veterans encounter after long service. These struggles do not overshadow his legacy of sacrifice, bravery, and perseverance. His courage and impact were recognized by those who served alongside him and memorialized in the book Echoes of Ramadi.
James is survived by his father, James W. MacKenzie Sr.; mother, Pensri Marks; stepfather, Larry Marks; sisters, Walisa Villarreal, Nalisa Leitao, Crystal Paul, and Debbie Lego; his children, Lexie Shillingburg, Brady MacKenzie, Trinity MacKenzie, Lincoln MacKenzie, Andrew MacKenzie, and Isaiah Ekl; as well as grandchildren, Raleigh and Lando Shillingburg.
A private family viewing took place on January 6, 2026, in Post Falls, Idaho. Funeral services with full military honors will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations to organizations that support veterans and those facing addiction, honoring the service, sacrifice, and journey of Gunnery Sergeant James William MacKenzie Jr., United States Marine Corps, Retired.
