John Robert Hallgreen

John Robert (Gus) Hallgreen, age 83, of Coeur d’Alene, ID, graduated to heaven on July 14, 2026. Following his cancer diagnosis, John was able to return home and complete his earthly journey surrounded by his beloved wife and daughters.

Gus was born to Clarice and Whitey Hallgreen in Sandpoint, ID, grew up in Seeley Lake, MT, and moved to Coeur d’Alene, ID where he graduated from the I.H.M. Academy. After his time in the Army, he returned to Coeur d’Alene to attend North Idaho College where he met the love of his life, Linda Stockwell.

Having a reputation for wearing matching shirts, they were happily married for 57 years and raised their two lovely daughters while enjoying all the beauty North Idaho had to offer.

John served as a teacher in the Post Falls School District for 31 years, where he genuinely loved working with his students and passing on his love for books and reading. Inside and outside the classroom, Mr. Hallgreen was known for his kindness, caring, generosity, good conversation, and making the person he was talking to feel valued.

He was a longtime member of St. Pius X Catholic Church where he served as a religious education teacher, parish council member, outreach committee chairperson, soup kitchen volunteer and a proud member of the Knights of Columbus. Gus spent many years volunteering for and serving as a board member of the St. Vincent De Paul Society. He loved to go grocery shopping for the Parish Food Pantry.

Gus loved to take long drives looking at the beautiful countryside with Linda while they shared a big Diet Coke. Together they were able to enjoy the beauty of much of the United States, but they especially loved driving to see their children and grandchildren: Ginger, Scott, Emily and Andrew Rast; Connie, Brian, Breanna, Cecilia and Connor Roth. Uncle Gus also loved to travel to see the children of his beloved sister Ellen Nibarger: Mike and Kathy Nibarger; Michelle and Tim Garland.

A Catholic Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Pius X Catholic Church on Thursday, July 23rd. Rosary to start at 10: 15 a.m., funeral mass beginning at 11:00 a.m. with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the St. Pius Food Pantry.
