Joseph Hodl III

Joseph Louis Hodl III, 64

Joseph Louis Hodl III, 64, succumbed to COVID-19 on Monday, August 17, 2020 at Kootenai Health.  He fought as hard as he could but was defeated by this terrible illness. He was an amazing husband, father, and grandpa.  His family misses him immensely. We have had a long wait to be able to honor and celebrate his life.

Joe was born on December 27, 1955 in Spokane, Washington to his parents Joseph L Hodl Jr and Patricia Ann (Michalek) Hodl.  He was raised in Spokane and attended St. Peter’s Catholic School, Gonzaga Prep, and Washington State University.  He graduated from Spokane Community College with a certification in Industrial Electricity.

After college graduation, Joe worked for his dad at H & N Electric for 20+ years.  In 1999, he started his own business in Post Falls, North Idaho Air Compressor.  He closed his business in 2004 after suffering a massive heart attack and quadruple coronary artery bypass surgery.  When he recovered, he spent most of the rest of his career working for Cascade Machinery & Electric in Spokane.

On May 1, 1982, he married his childhood sweetheart, Cheryl Ann (Cheri) McNabb.  They have been best friends since they were 12 years old.  They started their life together in Spokane, moving to Butte, Montana in 1988.  In 1992, they settled in Post Falls and made it their forever home.

Joe enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, and many trips to Yellowstone Park, but mostly he loved bringing joy to everyone he met and making people laugh.  He loved the WSU Cougars, especially the football team.  Joe held the Post Falls Trojans very close to his heart.  He served as the PFHS Booster Club president for 13 years. In the early 90’s, he was a volunteer EMT for the Post Falls Ambulance Service.  More recently, he enjoyed volunteering for coffee hour at St. George Catholic Church.

Joe is survived by his loving wife, Cheri.  He also leaves behind three of the most amazing children God ever created, Maggie Morrison and husband Justin, Andy Hodl and wife Samantha, and Caitlin Buechler and husband Jacob.  His three grandchildren Carol Ann and Brandon Morrison, and Ryker Hodl are especially the lights of his life.  Joe is also survived by his two brothers Tom and Chris Hodl.  He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Catherine.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Joe’s name to Post Falls High School Athletics would be appreciated. There will be a Memorial Mass for Joe held at St. George Catholic Church in Post Falls, Idaho, on May 8, 2021 at 11:00 am. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Post Falls. Arrangements are by English Funeral Chapel.
