Larry Ray Thorsness, 85, passed away peacefully on April 30, 2026, surrounded by the love and memories of a life well lived.
Born on February 21, 1941, Larry grew up in northern Idaho and carried with him throughout his life the values of hard work, loyalty, and devotion to family and friends. In 1960, he joined the United States Army and proudly served his country, including a tour in Germany.
Shortly after returning home and separating from the Army, Larry married the love of his life, Joan Marie Barkley, on February 1, 1963. Together they built a strong and lasting marriage filled with adventure, laughter, and unwavering partnership. Within their first year of marriage, they welcomed their first son, Jay.
Larry began his professional career as a county recorder before serving as a police officer for the City of Coeur d’Alene. After deciding that policing in the small town where he grew up was not quite the right fit, Larry discovered the career that would become his true calling with Knudtsen Chevrolet. During this transition, Larry and Joan welcomed their second son, Scott. Larry remained with Knudtsen Chevrolet for more than three decades, building countless friendships and earning the respect of coworkers and customers alike before retiring in 2002.
Outside of work, Larry fully embraced the outdoors and the friendships that made life rich. His happiest days were often spent on Lake Pend Oreille chasing trout or in the Coeur d’Alene mountains pursuing elk. He also loved RV traveling, especially when close friends joined in on the adventure. Whether at a campground, on the water, or around a campfire, Larry valued companionship, storytelling, and time shared with those he cared about most.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Hjalmer and Minnie Thorsness, and by his beloved wife, Joan Thorsness.
Larry will be remembered for his steady presence, persistent humor, strong work ethic, and deep love for his family and friends. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. A Memorial Service will be held Wednesday July 8 at 11:00 a.m. at English Funeral Chapel 1700 N Spokane St. Post Falls. Id.
