Obituary

Mary was born on Jan 29, 1944 in Oakes, ND, the second of six children.

In the fall of 1953, Mary’s Mom & Dad packed up five kids and headed for the state of Washington.

The sixth Child? Unbeknownst to Mary and her brothers, the sixth child was also along for the ride and later became the only one born in the state of Washington. The Roney clan’s first stop was in Marysville then a short stay in Everett then back to Marysville. The family finally landed in Buckley, Washington, and stayed there for many years, at least long enough for all six kids to graduate from White River High School.

Growing up in a large family as the oldest daughter, Mary took on many "Mom" duties while her mother worked. With her older brothers busy playing sports, Mary cared for the three youngest children, prepared meals, and helped keep both the household and the children organized.

Mary graduated in 1962 as a member of the first class to graduate from the brand-new high school in Buckley. After graduation, she put her secretarial training, including shorthand skills, to use by accepting a position with a large insurance company in Tacoma. It was there that Mary eventually met the love of her life, Mike Kane.

Mike and Mary were married on May 8, 1965. Their first home was in West Seattle, where they managed an apartment building while Mike completed his final years of college. Following Mike's graduation, they relocated to the Puyallup area, where Mike pursued a career in education. Mary worked a variety of jobs throughout the years, with her final position being with the Sumner School District. She eventually retired due to health concerns.

Things got briefly rocky between Mike and Mary around 1976. Though Mike moved out for a while, leaving Mary and the kids in the home of a missionary family in Lake Tapps, Washington with Mike in an apartment in Puyallup. The Lord was working on both of them, and a week before the separation became permanent, they both accepted Christ as their savior and reunited. The love story continued.

In 1980, the Kane family embarked on a journey to Kenya with the Africa Inland Mission. At Rift Valley Academy, Mary was the executive assistant to the principal and vice-principal. Among her duties was arranging transport for the students (every fourth month) whose parents were serving the Lord in seventeen different nations. Mike taught in ‘Titchie Swot’ (elementary school) and 8th Grade History. The kids were treated to an adventure that shaped all their lives in one way or another.

From 1982 to the early 2000’s Mary and Mike lived in the Puget Sound area. Then, upon the birth of their youngest daughter’s first child, they moved to North Idaho along with Mary’s Dad. There they enjoyed the company of two of their three kids and their grandkids. Mike and Mary found their church home in Hayden Bible Church. When Mary could no longer make the commute to church, she faithfully attended via YouTube and was blessed by visits from several members.

Mary Kane is loved by many and is remembered as being kind, warm, and one who loved to laugh. She spent her life dedicated to her family and serving Her Lord, may she now be free of all her earthly health issues and rest peacefully in Heaven for all eternity.

Mary is survived by her son, Steve Kane of Coeur d’Alene, ID. She was preceded in death by husband Mike in 2016 and daughters Lisa and Lori in 2023. She has five grandchildren and one great-grandchild all living in North Idaho.
