Fourth-generation Kootenai County resident Russell Dale Brown passed into his eternal home on October 18, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.
Russ was born on June 22, 1940, to Mr. and Mrs. Lyle C. Brown at the historic Home Hospital on the corner of Third and Foster in Coeur d'Alene. He spent his early childhood years in Hayden Lake where he and his older brother, Roger, “learned to be boys.” The family later moved to Coeur d’Alene where Russ attended junior high and high school, graduating in 1958.
After graduation, Russ enlisted in the U.S. Navy, proudly serving our country as a quartermaster in navigation aboard the U.S.S. Hornet, the U.S.S. Forster and the U.S.S. Vance. He also served aboard the U.S.S. Wilhoite during Operation Deep Freeze in the South Pole. After returning home following his enlistment, he attended North Idaho College, graduating in 1965.
Russ was amiable, well-spoken and respected by his peers, which led to him becoming student body president in both high school and college.
Born into a musical family, Russ's mother taught piano lessons for several years. It was here he met piano student Phyllis Barden of Post Falls, who became the one and only love of his life. They were married on December 26, 1965 and have enjoyed 60 wonderful years together. They welcomed a daughter, Debora, in 1967 and a son, Douglas, in 1969.
Russ’s good-natured personality and casual way with people led him to a career in advertising and sales. He worked for and transferred within the Hagadone Newspaper Group, where he held positions in four different papers in four states including The Coeur d’ Alene Press. In addition, he worked for the Spokesman Review and co-owned and published the North Idaho Senior Review. Later, he managed sales and advertising at Idaho Forest Industries-Atlas Building Center. After retirement, he worked another 10 years until 2012 with the U.S. Forest Service at the Fernan Ranger Station.
Russ was active the community organizations wherever he lived, including the Northwest Gold Prospectors Association and serving on the board of the North Idaho Building Contractors Association of Coeur d'Alene. He also was appointed as a commissioner with the Kootenai County Historical Preservation Commission, which reflected his deep passion for preserving local and family history.
A true team player, Russ enjoyed sports, racing motorcycles, camping with family and sparring with golf buddies. His life-long interest in mining led him on many adventures, including ownership and regional claims of the historical Treasure Box and Occident Mines in Murray, Idaho. Russ loved people and people loved him. His warm presence was often found at coffee shops, reunions and church gatherings, sharing laughter, singing and playing silly songs on the ukulele. Devoted and supportive of his family, he cherished visits with those near and far.
Russ’s greatest adventure began in the summer of 1972 when he gave his life to Christ. He never looked back on his commitment and his close walk with God was a powerful testimony for many who crossed his path. His example of friendship, kind words and faith have left a legacy that will continue to touch many lives. His loved ones take great comfort in knowing he is in heaven with his Lord.
Russ will be sorely missed by his beloved wife, Phyllis, of 60 years who faithfully nursed him to the end; his brother Roger and his wife, Donna Brown, of Sequim, WA; daughter Debora and her husband, Mark Cumpton, of Elgin, OR; son Douglas and his wife, Jeannie Brown, of Sandpoint, ID; nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
The family would like to sincerely thank the Schneidmiller Hospice House and Hospice of North Idaho, Dr. Michael Hillman, the many physicians and nurses at Kootenai Health, the Veterans Administration, their church family at Compel and other friends for their loving support and compassionate care during his final days.
A memorial celebration will be held at English Funeral Chapel in Coeur d’Alene on November 15 at 11:00 A.M. In lieu of flowers, Russ requested that donations be made to your favorite missionary fund or to those who further the gospel of Christ. Please sign Russ's guest registry and view the online memorial at www.englishfuneralchapel.com. The service will be live streamed.
