Steven Richard Lyle

April 29, 1963 — November 29, 2025

Steven Richard Lyle, 62, of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho made his way to heaven peacefully to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, surrounded by his loved ones while at Hospice of North Idaho November 29th around 6pm.

He was born in Moscow, Idaho April 29th, 1963, to Richard (Dick) and Judy Lyle. He was a beloved son, brother, husband, father, father-in-law, grandpa, uncle and friend. Steve spent most of his childhood growing up in Moscow, Idaho. Then moving to Bellevue, Washington, where he graduated from Sammamish High School in 1981. While in high school Steve enjoyed football, friends and the great outdoors. After graduating high school, the family made the move back to Moscow where his parents opened Akers Department Store. Steve worked as an employee for his parents in the big and tall department where he first met Tonya Christenson in the Winter of ‘82 while purchasing a Christmas gift for her father. Finally, in the Spring of ‘83, Steve got the courage to call Tonya and asked her on a first date. After dinner and movie Steve knew he had found the love of his life. Wedding plans were made that night; they were engaged 3 months later and married within 6 months of their 1st date on August 20, 1983.

A week prior to getting married, Steve opened his own big and tall store, during which they had their first child, Trisha, in June of ‘84. Later that year Steve merged his business with Husky Sporting Goods in Moscow, where he continued working as the manager for the next couple years and welcomed their second child, Cody, in December of ‘85.

As this season came to an end, Steve moved the family to Coeur d’Alene in the year of ‘87 to help his parents with their business, which started in their garage. As the family business grew, Steve had another urge. His love for fly fishing prompted him to open a Fly Shop in Midtown Coeur d'Alene where he sold his bugs and taught many fly-tying classes alongside continuing to work the family business; which was moved into the back of the fly shop because they had outgrown the garage.

In 1988, the family business became an official corporation under Lyle Enterprises. Their most desired product was knit inserts, which launched them into a wild frenzy of success. Steve and Tonya traveled to trade shows across the country, nailing down the largest customer since starting the business, Michael MJ Designs. With this success they ended up outgrowing the Midtown building and migrated north to a warehouse in Hayden, where they continued to grow the business and develop new products regularly. This continued for about a year, when an opportunity to buy the old Tidyman’s building on Best Ave, in Coeur d'Alene, became available. They then decided with all the added space; they would open a retail store and name it: Lyle Fabrics, Crafts and Gifts. Also, while continuing to run Lyle Enterprises in the back half of the building where they wholesaled and manufactured many products; such as, hunting game bags, hunting clothing, knit inserts, screen printing and their longest running product, See Your Stuff bags as well as many other loved items.

In 2014 as the retail business slowed down, Steve decided to downsize and focus strictly on wholesale and manufacturing, which lead to the sale of the building on Best Ave., and they moved to Post Falls for a short 6 years. In 2017, Steve’s health began to decline. In 2018, Steve underwent a two-way bypass which caused him to make another decision to downsize again, and he moved the business to his home. Through all of this, Steve continued to maintain a positive mindset pushing forward for the family and the business. In 2021, Steve was first diagnosed with cancer. For the next four years, Steve battled cancer while continuing to run a successful business taking care of his customers near and far, all while still making time for his family that he loved dearly.

For all that knew Steve; they knew he was a practical jokester always joking with anyone in an ears-reach. It didn’t matter if it was family, friends, the waitress at the restaurant, or even a stranger in line at the grocery store. He loved people and loved to make them laugh. Steve also loved working. He loved his customers and they loved him, building long-lasting personal relationships with each one of them! Steve was a selfless, God-fearing outdoorsman that found the most joy in the small and simple parts of life. He had a roof over his head, food in his belly, and a family that he cherished deeply. These were the constant utterings he shared. He didn’t need any more than that; Steve was always grateful, and he loved his life!

Steve is survived by his mother, Judy Lyle, his wife Tonya Lyle and their two children; Trisha Lyle, Cody Lyle (wife Kelsey, kids Wyatt and Berkley), sister Chris Koehler (husband William), sister Cheryl Chaney (husband Michael), as well as many nieces, a great niece, great nephews and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
